Getting Started with an Online Exhibit
Exhibition Design:
Before starting with Omeka S, we recommend that you think about what images you want to use and develop an initial organization for them. This could be a simple linear outline of how someone will move through your site page by page.
Image Preparation:
For images for which you have the rights, a good general guideline is to create tiff or jpeg images of at least 400 dpi. If materials are not your own, be sure to include the copyright holder in your metadata and make sure that your project is adding value to the work through analysis and not merely reproducing it.
Your Exhibition Site:
- Create Your Site: Upon Logging in, click on Sites on the left side of the screen. Click on Add New Site at the top of the screen. Add a title, a URL slug (this will actually become part of the URL), and a summary. Choose a theme for your site. Creating an Item Pool is optional.
- Create an Item Set for Your Site: Click on Item Sets from the left hand menu. Click on Add New Item Set. Give it a title and description. You can select a default template or class, but you don’t have to.
- Upload and Describe Your Images: Click on Items on the left hand menu. Click on Add New Item on the top of the screen. Under the Values tab, choose a template. Enter the metadata about your item. Under the Media tab, click on Upload on the right. Give your item a title and then browse to find the file on your computer and upload it. Under the Item Sets tab, find your name and item set on the right. Click on your item set to add this item to that set.
- Create your Site Pages: Click on Sites on the left hand menu, and click on the site you made. Click on Pages on the left hand menu and add pages to your site by click on Add New Page at the top. Add your page to the navigation by checking Add to Navigation.
- Check Your Navigation: Click on Navigation in the left hand menu. Your pages appear in their display order. You can change the order by dragging and dropping pages. Omeka allows you to make some pages subpages or “children” of other pages. You can make a page a “child” of another page by dragging it on top of the page that will be its “parent.”
- Add Content to Each Page: Click on Pages in the left hand menu, and then click on the name of the page you want to edit or the pencil icon. You will then see a page “shell” with different kinds of content blocks on the right that you can add. Start by adding a Page Title block. The Media, Browse Preview, Item Showcase, and Item With Metadata are blocks that will display your images in different ways. You can experiment, or view to the Omeka S manual for an explanation of what each content module does. Any time you want to see what the public page will look like, click on the View button on the upper right.
