Window Lattice
Islamic window screens, known in Spanish as celosías, had several architectural functions: they enabled light and ventilation to enter the building while providing a level of privacy. With its contrasting voids and solids, repeating semicircle cut-outs, and illusionistic interweaving, the screen represented in this work is a masterpiece of geometric design. Now in the Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Córdoba, this lattice, dating to the late 10th century, is a slightly different size to those used in the Great Mosque, so was probably intended for a different, yet equally sumptuous, location.
