Wenlock Abbey Chapter House

Wenlock Abbey Chapter House

Monoprint, 2022

Wenlock Abbey in Shropshire, northern England, was a Cluniac monastery and popular pilgrimage destination. The Romanesque Chapter House, the space where the monks discussed monastery business, was built around 1140. The interlacing round arches and zigzag decoration reminds us of Islamic architecture even if the designs might have been developed independently.

A monoprint is a print that has a reproducible element, in this case a dry point plate, but each print is slightly different in terms of colors, textures, layers, etc. This work features different textures to convey the ruined state of the abbey.
