Synagogue of Córdoba: Wall Detail with Inscription
Hebrew inscriptions, mostly taken from the Psalms, wrap around the windows in the Synagogue of Córdoba. The writing shown here is in a prominent location just to the right of the entrance. Translated from Hebrew, it reads, “Provisional sanctuary and abode for the Testimony completed by Yitzhak Moheb son of Mr. Ephraim Wadawa, in the [Hebrew] year [50]75 [(1315 C.E.)] So return, oh God hasten to return to Jerusalem.” The combination of Islamic-influenced geometric decoration with Hebrew lettering speaks to the multicultural nature of Córdoba in the Middle Ages.
