Synagogue of Córdoba Wall Arch
After the Jewish population was exiled from Spain in 1492, the Synagogue of Córdoba was used for a variety of functions before being dedicated as a hermitage and chapel to St Crispin. Originally, this polylobed arch was probably where the bimah, or pulpit for the reading of holy scriptures, was located. In a visual demonstration of the complex history of the three Abrahamic faiths in medieval Andalusia, the original stucco decoration with its repeating pointed arches is Islamic in style while the painted cross beneath must date to the later Christian period.
