Interior of the Great Mosque of Córdoba
Each extension to the Great Mosque in the Islamic era largely replicated the original design and structural layout of the 8th-century original. This work depicts the extension of Caliph al-Hakam II in 962-66. While this is a new build, the main prayer hall is virtually indistinguishable from earlier spaces. The capitals, the topmost member of the columns, were carved in a uniform design as opposed to the ancient Roman spolia capitals used in the first building, but the double-tiered horseshoe arches decorated with alternating stone and brick voussoirs create a sense of continuity and infinite repetition in the space as a whole.
