Façade of the Great Mosque of Córdoba
Caliph al-Hakam II’s extension to the Great Mosque included several portals that recalled the designs of the earliest entrances to the building. They are on the south-west side and lead directly to the new extension. Depicted here is the wall treatment above one of these portals: the drawing was deliberately left unfinished to convey the light of a summer morning as it illuminates the mosaic and carved decorations.
