Design based on carved stone screen from the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus
This design has many overlapping geometric elements including hexagons, circles, and trefoils. The woven rectilinear framework intersects with the blue trefoils in an interesting way to lead the eye across the piece. The color scheme was inspired by seeing indigo buntings in a sun-soaked summer meadow.
I wish to thank artist and teacher Richard Henry (www.artofislamicpattern.com) for demonstrating this pattern at a workshop organized by Scripts n’ Scribes. Check out their website for more opportunities to learn about Islamic arts: www.scriptsnscribes.com
