The Original Academic Focus (1893-1914)

To achieve its charter from the United States Congress, Bishop Hurst had to assemble a detailed plan for the funding and structure of American University. Hurst envisioned 4 schools which represented "the four departments of human knowledge": "the arts and sciences", "the medical", "the law" and "the theological". American University would only ever create the college of arts and sciences, but through partnerships with other institutions they have incompass all 4 fields of studies over the years. This initial academic vision would changed even before the first students of AU enrolled.
